Working with Parents of Children in Therapy

 As a child therapist or play therapist, there is very little formal training on how to incorporate parents or caregivers into our work with children. This training seeks to provide attendees with a deep toolkits of strategies and approaches for working with parents or caregivers as part of a child’s treatment plan.

Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) is an empirically supported approach for children 3-12 years and older that helps children express feelings, heal trauma, develop emotional regulation and problem-solving skills, as well as enhance self-esteem. The focus of this training is to provide participants with all the skills they need to confidently and competently conduct CCPT with their clients when they return to the workplace.

This 3-day, hands-on learning opportunity is limited to 8 participants per instructor to facilitate extensive experiential skill practice with individualized observation, coaching, and feedback from instructor (Conley, 2023).

Filial Therapy is an integrative family play therapy model that seeks to strengthen family relationships by engaging caregivers as vital partners in their child’s therapeutic process (Conley, 2023)

Filial Therapy is highly effective, empirically-supported intervention to address a wide variety of child and family difficulties. Participants will learn how to confidently and competently train and supervise parents as they conduct special child-centered play sessions with their own children (ages 3-12+) (VanFleet, 2023).

The Intensive Filial Therapy Training Program was developed by Dr. Risë VanFleet and features the work of Filial Therapy originators, Drs. Bernard and Louise Guerney. The training program is governed by the International Institute of Filial Therapy Professional Education (IIFTPE).
